RULKChronicle : PART ONE – THE INTELLIGENCIA : The Rise and Fall

Welcome to the RED HULK BLOG : RULKChronicle, a constantly updated page that will be dedicated to chronicling the history of the Red Hulk.

INTRODUCTION:

’If you hadn’t acted so irrationally we wouldn’t be in this situation” – General Ross

“Don’t be ridiculous Ross. This isn’t about me. This is about you General.” – Doc Samson

No one knew how telling those words would be, when HULK Issue #1 hit comic stands across the world with a mysterious, daunting, new symbol of unbridled power and rage on its cover: A roaring, fiendish, electric devil of a beast, fearsome and magnificent to behold. It was a different Hulk. It was a new Hulk. And he was red.

HULK Issue #1 exploded onto the comic scene in January of 2008, intriguing readers around the world with the question… ”Who was the Red Hulk?”. Combining the magnificent cover and interior art of Ed ‘born to draw Rulk’ McGuinness and a solid whodunit story by Jeph Loeb, the debut of the rip-roaring Red Hulk (a.k.a. Rulk) catapulted to the top of the sales charts, ranking #1 as the best selling comic book of its month. It was a huge success for Marvel and a landmark issue that gave birth to a new Marvel legend… a legend who’s appeal has still not wavered to this day.

Based initially on an idea by then Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada and fleshed out by co-creators Jeph Loeb, Ed McGuinness and arguably Jeff Parker (see Fall of the Hulks : Alpha), it took 22 issues to finally reveal the Rulk’s identity as no one other than the General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Since then, the Red Hulk has built up quite an arsenal of books, posters, video game appearances, action figures, statues, t-shirts and other collectables all in his image.

History had been made. A new major character had joined the best of the Marvel Universe lore. The Red Hulk cometh… and he was here to stay.

PART ONE – THE INTELLIGENCIA :

The Rise and Fall

Many years before the events of “Secret Wars”, the superior intelligent villain known as the Leader formed a collective of high brain-powered villains called the INTELLIGENCIA. Their purpose was not combative, but focused solely on plundering the world of knowledge from the less deserving… amassing stockpiles of stolen scientific and mystical intel that would serve them all in the future. The Wizard, Egghead, the Mad Thinker, the Red Ghost were all recruited respectively, partnered with Dr. Doom solely to serve as the keeper of a secure stronghold for their stolen texts in his sovereign nation of Latveria. (The munitions and other artifacts… like the deactivated Cosmic Hulk… were stored elsewhere).

The successful looting went on for years, until the death of Egghead during one of his solo tirades (killed by a backfiring gun blocked by one of Hawkeye’s arrows) became a dreadful blow to the INTELLIGENCIA and jeopardized their flow of intel. The leader recruited M.O.D.O.K. in his stead, and the plundering ultimately resumed.

One of their targets eventually became the raiding of the Edward’s Air Force Base, under the command and supervision of General Thaddeus Ross. Not only did they obtain satellite system schematics and other spoils, but they obtained the dead body of Betty Ross, who was critically poisoned by the toxic blood of the Abomination. It was thought at the time, if Betty could be revived, she could easily be used as leverage against Banner… against the Hulk or both.

Once their library of stolen texts were complete and secured in Latveria, Dr. Doom showed his hand and betrayed the INTELLIGENCIA driving the collective out of his nation, sending Leader’s life’s work into ruin. The INTELLIGENCIA was finished… or so Leader thought.

        • References : FALL OF THE HULKS : Alpha
        • Notes : If not for the death of Egghead, the Leader would have never recruited M.O.D.O.K. to join the INTELLIGENCIA collective… who was ultimately responsible for developing the initial idea to create a Red Hulk.

RULK REVIEW and ANALYSIS : WHAT IF GENERAL ROSS HAD BECOME THE HULK!

In 2008, the mysterious Red Hulk burst onto the comic scene with a vengeance.

The premiere issue debuted at #1 and left the comic community guessing exactly who was the man inside the crimson red beast!  Based initially on an idea by then Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada and fleshed out by co-creators Jeph Loeb, Ed McGuinness and arguably Jeff Parker (see Fall of the Hulks : Alpha), it took 22 issues to finally reveal Rulk’s identity as no one other than the General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.  It created shockwaves among Marvel fans.. yet most readers were unaware that writer Peter David realized an idea to also turn General Ross into a rampaging Hulk three years earlier in 2005’s WHAT IF GENERAL ROSS HAD BECOME THE HULK.

The story begins with Uatu The Watcher.  Testing a theory that his mere presence of observing an event can change an outcome of that very event, the Watcher observes a tragic alternate reality unfold when he revisits the one in a million gamma bomb explosion that turned the mild mannered Bruce Banner into the raging Hulk!  However, in this new string of time, it is Ross that calls off the countdown and attempts to forcefully remove Rick Jones from the testing area. Yet before Bruce can call it off, the notorious spy Igor successfully incapacitates Banner leaving no one other than Ross to absorb the life altering gamma rays!

Like separating the story into parts, veteran writer Peter David does a terrific job emulating the tone and feel of the legendary first issue of THE INCREDIBLE HULK fifty years ago.  The feeling of excitement David gives Ross is infectious as he realizes he’ll no longer require any military hardware to defend his homeland.  He will be America’s best weapon!  And the poetic tragedy that results from his new thunderous form is terrific… except for the final action of Bruce Banner.

The way Bruce handles the tragic finale is shocking and severely out of character.  Especially considering the agitated history between the two (nor the battle over Betty) has yet to even take place, one would expect this man of science would opt to cure the General Ross of his hulking condition, rather than speaking so incredibly cold and harsh and taking the heartless action that he did.  However, the great artwork by Pat Olliffe mostly makes up for the story’s one deep shortcoming.  Olliffe effectively draws characters that feel both fresh yet appropriately (and pleasantly) dated.

ROSS HULKS IN COMPARISON :

Now that Ross has become the Red Hulk, it’s inevitable that new readers of this one-shot will find it impossible not to make a comparison between the Rulk and his alternate reality counterpart.  Fortunately for continuity sake, both Ross Hulks are logical and consistent variations of each other… the biggest factor being neither transformation of Ross (Gray nor Red) results in an alternate personality.

Neither Rulk nor the Ross Hulk has that common multiple personality disorder that seems to be a reoccurring side effect of Gamma over-exposure. Lacking that disorder is due to Ross simply never having a suppressed aggressive, dark and violent side. Violence was never suppressed… as a soldier he acted on it. Lived it. Used it to make him stronger. So satisfyingly, it makes sense that neither of the Hulks Ross had become were stricken with that duality.

However, much like a stroke victim, the Ross Hulk does lose one of his motor skills during his transformation… the ability to speak.  The Red Hulk suffered from no such affliction.  It’s possible that losing the power to verbally communicate was a one in a million result that occurred during gamma saturation, unable to be duplicated.  Or maybe the gamma energy reacts to a genetic defect in the General, or simply caused a minor stroke, which results in the speechless outcome.  Either way, it is not at all a stretch to believe the great minds of the Leader and Modok (who created the Red Hulk) would detect whatever caused this debilitating side affect and easily compensate for it and eliminate it

The color difference between the Ross Hulks is the easiest to explain.  While the Gray Ross Hulk was created under the same exact variables as the Banner Hulk which is solely exposure to gamma energy, the Red Hulk was constructed with both gamma and cosmic power, which ultimately created a Hulk transformation that mimicked a radioactive core.

Finally, the disappearing mustache is the hardest to explain.  Obviously, where the Red Hulk is concerned, the removal of the trademark Ross mustache was first and foremost a necessary plot device to conceal the Rulk’s identity from readers until Marvel was ready to make the big reveal.  Fortunately though, the creators gave it enough thought to consistently make the General’s eyebrows disappear too, allowing readers to conclude that all short hairs on the body of Ross withdraw within his swollen red transforming flesh. So why didn’t this occur with the gray Ross Hulk transformation?  All one could hypothesize is that reaction is only produced as a byproduct of cosmic energy absorption or a mix of the two (both cosmic and gamma).  It’s not solely a gamma energy exposure trait.

Have any further input or insight to offer?  Feel free to put them in the comments below.

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 48

Jacob once had a dream… a dream now replaced with a living nightmare.

The horribly burned and disfigured Jacob, assistant to the formerly brilliant and beautiful project leader Parul Kurinji, once fantasized spending a romantic life with Parul.  But in the fantastic, action-packed HULK Issue # 48, Jacob never could have imagined the macabre reality that would come to pass, ever since Parul changed into the threat to humanity known as Zero/One.  Her creations… twisted acts against nature like horrific aquatic beasts, reanimated corpses and a juiced serial killer… were all manifested to extinguish lives for the woman he once loved.  It had to stop before it was too late.  So Jacob risks everything to bring Ross and his team the data needed to finally stop Zero/One.

Writer Jeff Parker continues to be on fire, this time delivering a spectacular thrill ride in Part Two of the  “Red Sky At Morning” story-arc .  In contrast to the final confrontation of the “Hulk of Arabia” climax between the Red Hulk and Dagan Shah that left a feeling of unquenched satisfaction, Rulk’s pulse pounding assault on Zero/One’s base (with the help of the Red She Hulk and Machine Man) ends with such gratifying results that it feels like the battle has been won… regardless if one eye must still remain perpetually fixed on the war.

Zero/One’s demise would have not been possible without the efforts of Jacob.  Her reluctant and terrified assistant that has seen enough horror to push him into the fray of insanity, became not just a victim… but a savior… quite possibly for the entire human race.  And Parker fleshes out his ironic circumstance so masterfully, it feels deeply tragic when it becomes evident that Jacob may never be able to escape the devastating fate that has befallen him.  Ever.

While it would have been icing on Parker’s oh so delicious cake to witness the Red Hulk’s thunderous blows successfully sink the synthetic island of vessels down to the ocean floor… as well as relish in Zero/One’s betrayer not holding back and watching him actually stick it to her… this hearty dish was simply a feast for the senses and concludes Jeff Parker’s most gratifying story-arc yet!

With the artistic talents of Elena Casagrande and Rachelle Rosenberg on the job, there is some serious Girl Power in this issue, which is fitting for a story filled with such powerful women.  Where the drawing is concerned, it seems the work and ability to dazzle the readers by the best Zero/One artist hands down Elena Casagrande increases with every panel.  From her eye catching unique aquatic beasts to her downright impressive sinister Black Fog, and her uncanny ability to draw a natural female form to a robust Red Hulk that keeps on getting better and better, Casagrande’s delightful imagery has developed into a wonderful unique style.

Now with coloring, unfortunately a colorist can sometimes have a thankless job.  But if anyone is deserving recognition in this department it’s the beautiful work by Rachelle Rosenberg.  Talking about it doesn’t do it justice. Let’s let some of her wonderful brilliance in coloring speak for itself. Take a look:

I would love to see this creative team work full time together.  This is an excellent, excellent comic.
